FALLOUT SHELTERS IN NYS PUBLIC SCHOOLS SUFFOLK COUNTY SCHOOL AMONG FIRST IN NATION

OFFICE OF CIVIL DEFENSE
THE NEED FOR FALLOUT SHELTERS TO BE INCLUDED IN THE DESIGN OF ALL NEW CONSTRUCTION SCHOOLS BEING MOST IMPORTANT

WILLIAM FLOYD HIGH SCHOOL
BECOMES FIRST IN NATION INCORPORATING A FALLOUT SHELTER AND EXTRA SAFEGUARDS AGAINST BLAST AND FALLOUT FOR STUDENTS AND TEACHERS DURING SCHOOLDAYS AND AT NIGHT THE SHIRLEY MASTIC RESIDENTS, JUST ABOUT EVERY RESIDENCE BELOW 27a  OLD SUNRISE HIGHWAY HAS NO BASEMENTS FOR PROTECTION SINCE THE MAJORITY OF HOMES ARE WITHIN 10 MILES FROM THE BAY AND OCEAN AND THE WATER LEVEL WILL NOT PERMIT BASEMENTS

SUFFOLK SCHOOL TAKES NUCLEAR WAR SERIOUSLY
PLANS FOR ALL NEW SCHOOLS BUILT IN SUFFOLK COUNTY TO INCLUDE CONSTRUCTION AND MATERIAL TO CREATE LARGE FALLOUTSHELTERS WITHIN SCHOOLS WITH PF-FACTORS OVER 100

ONE OF THE SCHOOLS THAT WERE RECOGNIZED FOR THEIR DESIGN  OF A NEW SCHOOL THAT INCORPORATED A FALLOUT SHELTER

THIS PANEL LISTED THE BUILDINGS RECOGNIZED FOR THEIR DESIGN AND THE NEW YORK CITY  LONG ISLAND AREA HAD 3 BUILDINGS THAT WERE RECOGNIZED OUT OF HUNDREDS OF DESIGNS NATION WIDE

ON THE PANEL FROM THE FALLOUT SHELTERS AND NEW CONSTRUCTION YOU CAN SEE THAT LONG ISLAND (SUFFOLK CO.) IS LISTED AND NEW YORK CITY (KINGS CO.)

THIS IS A FEMA 1980  ERA  SOVIET NUCLEAR ATTACK TARGET PACKAGE ,NYC AND LONG ISLAND WOULD BE DEVASTATED AND WOULD A FALLOUT SHELTER MAKE A DIFFERENCE , CURRENT TARGET ESTIMATION IS ALOT DIFFERENT SINCE THE MILITARY HAS CLOSED ALL THE BASES IN NYC AND ON LI AND THE DEFENSE INDUSTRY AND AVIATION MFG IS NO LONGER HERE

THIS CIVIL DEFENSE PAMPHLET THAT OUTLINED WHAT THE DISPLAY PANELS ABOVE WERE PART OF WAS HARD TO FIND AND THAT THE BOOKLET SHOWS THE SCHOOLS AND INDUSTRIAL SHELTER TYPES WITH INFORMATION, THE CIVIL DEFENSE MUSEUM .COM HAD PURCHASED A CIVIL DEFENSE DISPLAY AND THE PANELS TO IT WERE ASSEMBLED AND PUT ON DISPLAY IN GOVT. BUILDINGS, AND OTHER PUBLIC PLACES EXPLAINING HOW FALLOUT SHELTERS CAN BE ADDED TO NEW CONSTRUCTION WITH MINIMAL COST AND GAVE EXAMPLES OF AWARD WINNG DESIGNS OF RECENT CONSTRUCTION, I SEARCHED AROUND TRYING TO FIND MORE INFORMATION ON THE 3 LOCATIONS SHOWN ON THE PANEL THAT IS YELLOW AND SHOWS THE UNITED STATES WITH SMALL FALLOUT SHELTER ICONS, AND PROVIDES A LISTING, THE OCD PAMPHLET GOES INTO DETAIL ABOUT THE PROGRAM AND THE WINNING EXAMPLES.

THE SCHOOL DISTRICT FELT THE NEED OF PROTECTION FROM NUCLEAR ATTACK DUE TO THE PROXIMITY OF THE AEC NUCLEAR WEAPONS TEST FACILITY OR BROOKHAVEN NATIONAL LABORATORY, THEY  TESTED WHAT FALLOUT DOES TO THE ENVIROMENT AND WERE PART OF THE LARGER ATOMIC TESTS IN THE PACIFIC AND EXPIREMENTED ON THE ISLAND PEOPLE OF THE AREA EXPOSED TO RADIATION NEVER TREATING THESE PEOPLE JUST STUDYING THEM, ALSO THEY NUKED A LARGE AREA OF PINE BARRENS ON LAB PROPERTY BY INSTALLING CESIUM 137 OR OTHER RADIOACTIVE ELEMENT FOUND IN FALLOUT BY PUTTING IT IN A CONTAINER ON A POLE AND UNSHIELDED THE RADIOACTIVE MATERIAL REMOTELY AND STUDIED THE DIE OFF OF TREES AND WILDLIFE AND OTHER  PLANTS AND FOLIAGE AND IT IS STILL THERE AND THE AREA IS TOO RADIOACTIVE TO HANG AROUND FOR ANY POINT OF TIME, A DEFINITE TARGET ON THE SOVIETS
NUCLEAR TARGETING PACKAGE,

SCHOOLS ARE BUILT BETTER THAN ARMORYS ON LONG ISLAND

EXAMPLES OF HOW FALLOUT SHIELDING CAN BE ACHIEVED BY MATERIAL AND FLOOR PLANS

THE SCHOOLS ALSO SHOWED HOW MINIMAL IN COST IT WAS TO ADD THE FALLOUT SHELTER SINCE STOCKING AND OTHER ISSUES WERE TAKEN CARE OF BY THE OFICE OF CIVIL DEFENSE

THE NATIONAL FALLOUT SHELTER PLAN OF THE
EARLY 1960s WAS BACKED BY US GOVT. FUNDING.  THE NEED NOT ONLY FOR MORE COMMUNITY SHELTER SPACE WAS NEEDED BUT ALSO SCHOOLS HAD OBLIGATIONS TO GUARANTEE EVERY CHILDS SAFETY SO AS SCHOOLS WERE BUILT FALLOUT SHELTER SPACE WAS NEEDED AND PLANNED FOR. NYS GOV. NELSON ROCKEFELLER WAS A CIVIL DEFENSE ADVOCATE AND PUSHED MANY CIVIL DEFENSE PROGRAMS ON NEW YORKERS DURING THE 1960s AND SUFFOLK COUNTY A SUBURB OF NYC WAS GROWING VERY RAPIDLY DURING THOSE YEARS AND SHIRLEY A TOWN 58 MILES TO THE EAST BUILT THEIR NEW SCHOOL WITH FALLOUT PROTECTION IN MIND AND BECAME ONE OF THE FIRST TO DO SO AND WAS MENTIONED IN ONE OF THE LAST GREAT PUSHES OF CIVIL DEFENSE IN AMERICA AND THE ABOVE LITERATURE ON THE NFSP AND WHAT IT WAS ABOUT LISTED THEIR EFFORT, AND THE WILLIAM FLOYD SCHOOL DISTRICT BECAME A ROLE MODEL TO OTHER SCHOOLS IN AMERICA BUT ON LONG ISLAND ALL SCHOOL DISTRICTS FOLLOWED THEIR LEAD AND STOCKED SCHOOLS WITH THE ABOVE SUPPLIES AND INCORPORATED A SHELTER AND LIKE MOST SCHOOLS ON LONG ISLAND WERE BUILT DURING THAT ERA LARGE BRICK AND MARBLE CONSTRUCTION THICK CINDERBLOCK BRICK CONSTRUCTION THAT WAS NOT ONLY FOR PROTECTION DURING THE DAY FOR CHILDREN THESE SCHOOLS BECAME THE NEIGHBORHOOD FALLOUT SHELTER FOR ALL HOURS, THE TYPE OF SCHOOLS BUILT DURING THE COLD WAR OFFERED NOT ONLY FALLOUT PROTECTION BUT WERE BLAST RESISTANT  TO A POINT AND THESE SCHOOLS HAVE OPENED AS SHELTERS DURING NATURAL DISASTERS AND OTHER COMMUNITY CRISES LIKE INNOCULATION SITES DURING THE 1977 SWINE FLU OUTBREAK AND  THE COUNTY LISTED THEM ON THEIR CSP AS PLACES TO TAKE SHELTER IN THE EVENT OF A NUCLEAR ATTACK, THESE NEW COLD WAR ERA CONSTRUCTION BUILDINGS WERE BUILT LIKE MUS..EUMS AND THE SCHOOL I WENT TO OVER 30 YRS AGO IS STILL IN THE SAME SHAPE TODAY.AND ALL ARE MARKED AS COMMUNITY FALLOUT SHELTERS WITH SIGNS AND ALL AND SOME ARE STILL STOCKED WITH WATER BARRELS THANKS TO THE CIVIL DEFENSE MUSEUM FOR THE ABOVE LITERATURE AND FOR MORE INFO ON COLD WAR CIVIL DEFENSE VISIT CIVILDEFENSEMISEUM.COM

COLD WAR PROPAGANDA 4 " NATIONAL DEFENSE "

X-15 AWAY .......TARGET; 100 Miles Up !
BENDIX Builds Missiles,Aviation,Automotive,Tools etc..

THIS COULD OF BEEN A LONG ISLAND NEIGHBORHOOD

THE COLD WAR CREATED A MARKET WHERE GOVERNMENT CONTRACTORS CREATED JOBS HERE IN THE UNITED STATES AND ALLOWED EVERY AMERICAN TO FEEL PROUD OF WHAT EVER THEIR COMPANY BUILT,PUT FOOD ON THE TABLE AND MADE THIS NATION SECURE AND THE IMAGINATIONS OF THE AMERICANS THAT BUILT JETS, RADAR,SATELLITES ARE THE REASON THAT WE HAVE CELL PHONES, VIDEO GAMES, EVEN THE INTERNET AND NO NO MATTER WHAT EX VICE PRESIDENT GORE SAYS HE DID NOT INVENT IT. THESE THINGS CAME ABOUT LIKE THOUSANDS OF OTHER THINGS FROM THE HUGE NATIONAL DEFENSE INDUSTRY DURING THE COLD WAR, DURING THE 1950s AND 60-70s NATIONAL DEFENSE WAS PRIORITY AND COMPANYS SUCH AS THE ABOVE ONES ARE THE REASON WE WERE A SUPERPOWER, DO YOU THINK A PLOT LIKE 9/11 WOULD OF GOT OFF THE GROUND DURING THOSE YEARS??? ONE THING THIS NATION DID WAS SELL ITS SOUL MOVING TO OTHER COUNTRIES TO BUILD EVERYTHING WITH CHEAP LABOR AND I HAVE EVEN SEEN U.S. MILITARY GEAR WITH MADE IN CHINA ON IT! THIS ALSO DISMANTLED THE DEFENSE OF THE NORTH AMERICAN CONTINENT AS SAC,NORAD, AIR DEFENSE WAS DRASTICALLY DOWNSIZED AND THE MISSION HAS CHANGED, AND BY THE TIME THEY GOT A PAIR OF F-18s ARMED AND AIRBORNE BOTH TOWERS OF THE WORLD TRADE CENTER LAY ON THE GROUND.SO ENJOY THE ADVERTISMENTS AND REMEMBER WHAT WAS.......

SOVIET CIVIL DEFENSE A CHILLING REALITY

BE SURE TO WATCH SOVIET CIVIL DEFENSE FORCES IN ACTION AFTER A MOCK US NUCLEAR ATTACK THE VIDEO IS  POSTED ABOVE. WE MAY HAVE HAD THE MONEY TO FUND A SHELTER PROGRAM AND A CIVIL DEFENSE PROGRAM THAT WAS SLOWLY RUN IN TOTHE GROUND AND WAS ABANDONDED IN PLACE BY FEMA AND NOT INTERESTED AMERICANS TOO LAZY TO VOLUNTEER OR DID NOT THINK LIFE AFTER A NUCLEAR ATTACK WOULD BE WORTH LIVING WHILE ACROSS THE OCEAN THE SOVIET UNION LEAD A NOT WELL FUNDED CIVILIAN LEAD CIVIL DEFENSE FORCE THAT IS FAR SUPERIOR TO ANYTHING WE HAVE PRESENTLY. THANK GOD THE COLD WAR IS OVER .....

CIVIL DEFENSE PROPAGANDA 3

CIVIL DEFENSE  AGAINST AN ATOMIC ATTACK WAS THE ONLY WAY TO SURVIVE AND AMERICAN COMPANIES OVERNIGHT FOUND NEW PURPOSES FOR THEIR PRODUCTS SUCH AS THE "GERSTENSLAGER" TRUCK BODY COMPANY THEY MARKETED THEIR COMERCIAL SPECIALTY VEHICLES AS CIVIL DEFENSE RESCUE TRUCKS THE FORE RUNNERS OF WHAT WOULD BECOME "RESCUE SQUADS" IN FIRE DEPARTMENTS NATIONWIDE THEY WERE OUTFITTED WITH ALL THE SPECIAL TECHNICAL TOOLS NEEDED POST NUCLEAR ATTACK OR NATIONAL DISASTER THE FIRST "JAWS OF LIFE" THE TRUCKS CARRIED GENERATORS ,CUTTING TORCHES, CRIBBING TO SHORE UP COLLAPSED BLDGS.,ROPES,AND EVERY TOOL THAT COULD BE USEFUL POST ATOMIC ATTACK AND AMERICA USED MONEY ALLOCATED BY WASHINGTON TO BUY THESE RIGS AND CITYS ALL OVER THE UNITED STATES HAD TRUCKS EITHER MADE BY GERTSLAGGER OR A SIMILIAR TRUCK COMPANY PAINTED WHITE AND MARKED WITH THE CIVIL DEFENSE LOGO OF THE "CD" INSIDE A  TRIANGLE ON A BLUE CIRCLE AND DESIGNATED RESCUE SQUADS, CITIES LIKE CHICAGO HAD VAST FLEETS AND ARE DOCUMENTED ONLINE

EVERY COMPANY IN AMERICA JUMPED ON THE CIVIL DEFENSE BAND WAGON HERE A COMPANY THAT MADE CAR HORNS AND AIRHORNS ON TRUCKS STARTED MARKETING CIVIL DEFENSE SIRENS AND WARNING HORNS, MANY CITY CIVIL DEFENSE AGENCIES SUDDENLY FOUND THEMSELVES AWASH IN GOVERNMENT CASH FOR CIVILIAN DEFENSE PURPOSES AND EVERY MFG WAS JUMPING ON THE BAND WAGON TRYING TO GET A SHARE OF THIS NEW FOUND GOLD MINE.

COLD WAR MOVIES FOR THE AMERICAN PUBLIC SERIES- "DR STRANGELOVE OR HOW I LEARNED TO LOVE THE BOMB"

"DR STRANGELOVE"
AMERICA'S TAKE ON THE COLD WAR THROUGH HUMOR
AND PROBABLY ONE OF THE BEST MOVIES MADE DURING THE PERIOD. SOME OF THE SCENES IN THE MOVIE WERE BORDERING TOP SECRET KNOWLEDGE AND MILITARY BRASS AT THE PENTAGON HAD TO LOOK AND SEE IF ANY OF WHAT IS DEPICTED MAYBE A DANGER TO NATIONAL SECURITY SINCE THE NATIONAL WAR PLAN AND USAF OPERATIONS CHAIN WAS TOO CLOSE TO THE ACTUAL TRUTH AND MIGHT NEED TO BE CENSORED, THE MOVIE A SATIRE / COMEDY ON THE UNITED STATES CURRENT NUCLEAR FORCES WAS A FUNNY AND HAD MOVIE GOERS SITTING ON THE EDGE OF THEIR SEATS OR LAUGHING AT THE INSANE SCENES WITH CHARACTERS LIKE GEN.JACK D. RIPPER AND COL. K KONG AND THE REFERENCE TO THE MILITARY AND US GOVT. USE OF EX- NAZI SCIENTISTS THAT PUT THE UNITED STATES ROCKET INDUSTRY GOING AND PUT MEN ON THE MOON, WAS FUNNY BUT TRUTH DID SHINE THROUGH IN THOSE COMIC MOMENTS, THE FLIGHT OF B-52s HEADING INTO RUSSIA AND THEIR COMMITMENT WAS FOR ME AS A KID SOMETHING THAT I WANTED TO BE PART OF WHEN I GREW OLDER AND THE CREW FEATURING A VERY YOUNG JAMES EARL JONES AND SLIM PICKENS AS COL.KONG, THE PART THAT EVERYBODY REMEMBERS IS COL. KONG AS HE GOT INTO THE BOMB BAY AND DISLODGED HIS THERMONUCLEAR DEVICE THAT WAS HUNG UP ONLY TO ACCIDENTLY WIND UP RIDING IT INTO WHAT LOOKED LIKE A SOVIET ICBM SITE WHILE HOOTING AND HOLLERING AND ACTING AS A BULL RIDER IN A RODEO AS HE WAVED HIS COWBOY HAT AROUND TILL HE WAS VAPORIZED WAS A GREAT SCENE AND PART OF WHY TO THIS DAY IS A TOP FILM! IF YOU NEVER SAW IT GO OUT AND GET IT! ITS WORTH WATCHING AND YOU PROBABLY WILL WATCH IT OVER!

Dr. Strangelove is considered by many veterans to be the most accurate film every made about SAC, at least in terms of depicting air crews and how they respond to adversity. Of course the pilot, Major Kong (King Kong), played by Slim Pickens, wears a cowboy hat. It does not contain any whining wives, but does address the insanity of the Cold War.

It begins with a B-52 on airborne alert. The 24 hour flights were really boring! Slim Pickens is almost asleep. Another crew member has his feet propped up while he scan the latest issue of Playboy.

Meanwhile, back at their base, the wing commander, Major Jack E. Ripper, played by Sterling Hayden, has gone mad. Seems as if his sexual performance fell below customary standards and this led him to conclude it was the result of fluoride being added to our water. He is convinced it is part of the communist conspiracy to take over the world. n our water. He responds by ordering the six bombers of his wing on airborne alert to attack the Soviet Union. He then calls SAC headquarters and tells the duty officer what he has done, then adds, "You can stop them, so you'd better send the rest of SAC in after them."

The scene then switches to the Pentagon's huge underground War Room, a murky, cavernous room with a round conference table and a massive graphic display strategic map lit to indicate the progress of the bomber wing planes to their Russian targets. Lights illuminate the room from above in a circle, casting a glow over the assembled egghead 'Adlai Stevenson-like' President, Merkin Muffley and his idiosyncratic advisers at a huge round table. The President and his advisers, scramble to stop the impending nuclear Armageddon. Unfortunately, the bombers are ordered to maintain radio silence and the only man who can recall the planes is the insane general Ripper.

The versatile English actor, Peter Sellers, plays Major Mandrake, an RAF attached to General Rippers headquarter, the President and Dr. Strangelove.

Muffley then consults with a wheelchair-bound German nuclear scientist (ex-Nazi "kraut" formerly named Merwerdich-liebe, literally meaning "strange-love") and U.S. weapons strategist, Dr. Strangelove. With thick dark glasses, Strangelove, director of weapons research and development, also has a black-gloved mechanical, robotic right hand which shakily holds his cigarette. Strangelove, who epitomizes the mad scientist is often unable to control his body, especially his arm which jumps to attention at inopportune moments.

Finally retaking the base, British exchange officer, Lionel Mandrake discovers the code to withdraw the B-52's and prevent the triggering of the "Doomsday Device." However one B-52 was damaged and it never receives the recall order. Unwilling to concede defeat the crew of the "Leper Colony" flies under radar cover to its target, only to be unable to launch its missiles. Finally, riding the missile to its target in Russia, Major Kong, exemplifies the American cowboy image. Unable to stop the Doomsday Device, the movie ends with numerous shots of mushroom clouds set to the light World War II song, "We'll Meet Again."

Quotes from the film

Dr. Strangelove: Based on the findings of the report, I concluded that such a device would not be a practical deterrent for reasons which at this moment must seem all too obvious.

Ripper: Mandrake, do you recall what Clemenseau once said about war?

Mandrake: No, I don't think I do, sir, no.

Ripper: He said that war was too important to be left up to the generals. When he said that, 50 years ago, he might have been right. But today, war is too important to be left to politicians. They have neither the time, the training, nor the inclination for strategic thought.

General Turgidson: Tell you what you do, baby: you just start your countdown, and old Bucky will be back before you can say "Blast off!"

General Jack D. Ripper: Mandrake, do you realize that in addition to fluoridating water, why there are studies underway to fluoridate salt, flour, fruit juices, soup, sugar, milk... ice cream. Ice cream, Mandrake, children's ice cream.

Group Captain Lionel Mandrake: Lord, Jack.

Ripper: You know when fluoridation first began?

Mandrake: Aye, no, no. I don't Jack.

Ripper: Nineteen hundred and forty-six. Nineteen forty-six Mandrake. How does that coincide with your post-war Commie conspiracy, huh? Its incredibly obvious isn't it. A foreign substance is introduced into our precious bodily fluids without the knowledge of the individual. Certainly without any choice. That's the way your hard-core Commie works.

Mandrake: Uh, Jack, Jack, listen, tell me, tell me, Jack. When did you first...become...

well, develop this theory?

Ripper: Well, I, uh...I...I...first became aware of it, Mandrake, during the physical act of love.

Mandrake: Hmm.

Ripper: Yes, a uh, a profound sense of fatigue...a feeling of emptiness followed. Luckily I...I was able to interpret these feelings correctly. Loss of essence.

Mandrake: Hmm.

Ripper: I can assure you that it has not recurred, Mandrake. Women uh...women sense my power and they seek the life essence. I do not avoid women, Mandrake.

Mandrake: No.

Ripper: But I...I do deny them my essence.

Major T. J. "King" Kong: Goldie, how many times have I told you guys that I don't want no horsing around on the airplane.

Major T. J. "King" Kong: Now I've been to one world fair, a picnic and a rodeo and that's the stupidest thing I've heard come over a set of earphones. Are you sure you got today's codes?

Major T. J. "King" Kong: Now boys I reckon this is it...nuclear combat toe to toe with the Ruskies.

Major T. J. "King" Kong: Look boys I ain't much of a hand at making speeches, but I got a pretty fair idea that something doggoned important is goin' on back there. And I got a fair idea the kinda personal emotions that some of you fellas may be thinkin'. Heck, I reckon you wouldn't even be human beings if you didn't have some pretty strong personal feelings about nuclear combat. I want you to remember one thing, the folks back at home are counting on you and by golly we ain't about to let them down. I tell you something else, if this thing turns out to be half as important as I figure it just might be, I'd say that you're all in line for some important promotions and personal citations when this thing is over with. That goes for ever' last one of you regardless of your race, color or creed. Now let's get this thing on the hump...we got some flying to do.

Major T.J. "King" Kong: Well boys, we've got three engines out, we've got more holes in us than a horse trader's mule, the radio is gone and we're leaking fuel and if we was flying any lower why we'd need sleigh bells on this thing...but we've got one thing on those Ruskies. At this height why thy might harpoon us but they dang sure ain't gonna spot us on no radar screen!

Mandrake: Colonel! Colonel, I must know what you think has been going on here!

Guano: You wanna know what I think?

Mandrake: Yes!

Guano: I think you're some kind of deviated prevert. I think General Ripper found out about your preversion, and you were organizing some kind of mutiny of preverts. Now MOVE!!

Mandrake: Colonel...that Coca Cola machine. I want you to shoot the lock off it. There may be some

change in there.

Guano: That's private property.

Mandrake: Colonel! Can you possibly imagine what is going to happen to you, your frame outlook way of life and everything, when they learn that you have obstructed a telephone call to the President of the United States? Can you imagine?! Shoot it off! Shoot! With a gun! That's what the bullets are for you twit!!

Guano: Okay. I'm gonna get your money for ya. But if you don't get the President of the United States on that phone, you know what's gonna happen to you?

Mandrake: What?!

Guano: You're gonna have to answer to the Coca Cola company.

General Jack Ripper: I can longer sit back and allow communist infiltration, communist indoctrination, communist perversion and the international communist conspiracy to sap and impurify all of our precious bodily fluids.

General "Buck" Turgidson: I don't think it's quite fair to condemn the whole program because of a single slip up.

General "Buck" Turgidson: I'm not saying we wouldn't get our hair mussed. But I do say no more than ten to twenty million killed, tops. Uh, depending on the breaks.

Major T. J. "King" Kong: Survival kit contents check. In them you'll find: one 45 caliber automatic, two boxes of ammunition, four days concentrated emergency rations, one drug issue containing antibiotics, morphine, vitamin pills, pep pills, sleeping pills, tranquilizer pills, one miniature combination Russian phrase book and Bible, one hundred dollars in rubles, one hundred in gold, nine packs of chewing gum, one issue of prophylactics, three lipsticks, three pairs of nylon stockings. Shoot! A fella could have a pretty good weekend in Vegas with all that stuff.

General "Buck" Turgidson: Gee, I wish we had one of them doomsday machines.

The President: That's mass murder, not war!

The President: You can't fight in here, this is the War Room!

The President to the Soviet Premier over the red phone: Hullo? ... Ah ... Hello, Dm... ah ... Hello, Dmitri? ... Listen, ah, I can't hear too well. Do you suppose you could turn down the music just a little? ... Oh-ho, that's much better. ... yeah ... ha ... yes ... Fine, I can hear you now, Dmitri. ... Clear and plain and coming through fine. ... I'm coming through fine, too, eh? ... Good, then ... well, then, as you say, we're both coming trough fine. ... Good. ... Well, it's good that you're fine and ... and I'm fine. ... I agree with you, it's great to be fine. ... a-ha-ha-ha-ha. Now then, Dmitri, you know how we've always talked about the possibility of something going wrong with the bomb. ... The bomb , Dmitri. ... The hydrogen bomb! ... Well now, what happened is ... ah ... one of our base commanders had a sort of ... well, he went a little funny in the head ... you know ... just a little ... funny. And, ah ... he went and did a silly thing. ... Well, I'll tell you what he did. He ordered his planes ... to attack your country... Ah... Well, let me finish, Dmitri. ... Let me finish, Dmitri. ... Well listen, how do you think I feel about it?! ... Can you imaginehow I feel about it, Dmitri? ... Why do you think I'm calling? Just to say hello? ... Of courseI like to speak to you! ... Of courseI like to say hello! ... Not now, but anytime, Dmitri. I'm just calling up to tell you something terrible has happened... It'sa friendly call. Of course it's a friendly call. ... Listen, if it wasn't friendly ... you probably wouldn't have even got it. ... They will not reach their targets for at least another hour. ... I am ... I am positive, Dmitri. ... Listen, I've been all over this with your ambassador. It is not a trick. ... Well, I'll tell you. We'd like to give your air staff a complete run-down on the targets, the flight plans, and the defensive systems of the planes. ... Yes! I mean i-i-i-if we're unable to recall the planes, then ... I'd say that, ah ... well, ah ... we're just gonna have to help you destroy them, Dmitri. ... I know they're our boys. ... All right, well listen now. Who should we call? ... Who should we call, Dmitri? The ... wha-whe, the People... you, sorry, you faded away there. ... The People's Central Air Defense Headquarters. ... Where is that, Dmitri? ... In Omsk. ... Right. ... Yes. ... Oh, you'll call them first, will you? ... Uh-hu ... Listen, do you happen to have the phone number on you, Dmitri? ... Whe-ah, what? I see, just ask for Omsk information. ... Ah-ah-eh-uhm-hm ... I'm sorry, too, Dmitri. ... I'm very sorry. ... All right , you're sorrier than I am, but I am as sorry as well. ... I am as sorry as you are, Dmitri! Don't say that you're the more sorry than I am, because I'm capable of being just as sorry as you are. ... So we're both sorry, all right?! ... All right. ...

(1968) USAF SURVIVE TO FIGHT ATOMIC WEAPON HITS ADC BASE JETS SCRAMBLE INTERCEPT SOVIET ATTACKERS

THIS IS A CLASSIC UNITED STATES AIR FORCE TRAINING FILM THAT IS BASED ON SURVIVABILITY OF USAF BASE OPERATIONS IN THE CONTINENTAL UNITED STATES AFTER A NUCLEAR ATTACK,BASES LIKE THIS ONE WERE SCATTERED THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES DURING THE COLD WAR PERIOD THE AMOUNT OF PRESSURE AND RESPONSIBILITY THESE MEN HAD HAD HANDLING NUCLEAR WEAPONS THAT WERE USED ON INTERCEPTOR AIRCRAFT ,THE # AM SCRAMBLES INTO THE WINTER NIGHT NOT KNOWING IF THIS WAS FOR REAL AS BASE AIRCRAFT PEELED OUT LAUNCHING IN PAIRS SC REAMING INTO THE WINTER NIGHT WAITING FOR WORD OF WHAT WAS GOING ON. THE AIRMEN AT THESE BASES KNEW ANY ATTACK ON THE US THEY WOULD BE AMONG THE FIRST TO KNOW AND FIRST TO GO WHILE THE COMMUNITIES OUTSIDE THE GATES NEVER KNEW HOW CLOSE THEY WERE TO WAR AS THE BASES WENT TO DIFFERENT DEFCON LEVELS, THIS WAS NOT INFORMATION FOR THE PUBLIC. THE FILM STARTS AT NIGHT AND THE SAC AIR DEFENSE COMMAND LAUNCHES ITS F-101 INTERCEPTOR AIR CRAFT AND PREPARES TO RIDE OUT A NUCLEAR STRIKE AS CONFIRMATION OF INCOMING MISSILES IS CONFIRMED. THANKS TO A CLIMATE OF GUARDED DEFENSE THE AIR FORCE BASE IS ABLE TO BUILD DEFENSIVE AND SHELTER FACILITIES TO SURVIVE AND FIGHT AND AS A NUCLEAR DETONATION IS CONFIRMED ON BASE THE AIR FORCE BEGINS TO DEAL WITH THE PROBLEMS SO ITS AIR WING CAN COME BACK AND RE-ARM AND RE-FUEL A GREAT SUBJECT THAT U.S. MILITARY FORCES HAD TO PLAN FOR AND TRAIN AND THIS FILM SHOWS WHAT THEY EXPECTED, THE REAL QUESTION IS IT REALISTIC IN ITS EXPECTATION? THE ONE THING IS THAT IT IS PRICELESS THAT THE USAF MADE THIS TRAINING FILM AND ITs QUOTES LIKE "HAVE NO UMBRELLAS,IF IT STARTS TO RAIN WE WILL LET YOU KNOW." AND "YOU CALL US BECAUSE IF YOU DON'T WE WILL BE CALLING YOU" WEIRD,.. BUT STILL GREAT PROPAGANDA!FILMED AT A SAC AIR DEFENSE INTERCEPTOR BASE LOCATED IN OXNARD, OXNARD AFB CALIFORNIA 1967 THIS IS BASICALLY WHEN CLOSING OF SAC ADC BASES WAS GOING ON ALL OVER (SUFFOLK COUNTY AFB LONG ISLAND NEW YORK) RESPONSIBLE FOR THE NYC AREA FOR MOST OF THE COLD WAR.DURING 1968- EARLY 1970s MOST OF THESE AIR FORCE ADC UNITS WENT OVER TO FIGHT IN VIETNAM AND THAILAND AS FORWARD AIR CONTROL AND MUNITION LOADERS FOR USAF STRIKE PLANES USING IRON BOMBS INSTEAD OF ATOMIC MUNITIONS BOMBING NVA BASES AND NORTH VIETNAM AND THE ADC PILOTS AND BACKSEATERS WENT OVER ALSO, TO ME THESE GUYS REALLY SERVED THEIR COUNTRY PLUS ONE AND DESERVE BIG RESPECT , MY HATS OFF TO THE USAF AIRMEN OF ADC/SAC AND VIETNAM/THAILAND/LAOS

DEFCON THE ULTIMATE NUCLEAR WAR SIMULATION

NYC EMERGENCY BROADCAST PLEASE STAND BY FOR OFFICIAL INFORMATION (1980-1984)

USAF/SAC AT DEFCON ONE AND CONFIDENCE IS HIGH! "EXECUTIVE DESCISION" USAF'S NUCLEAR POSTURE

PROBABLY THE MOST TELLING STORY OF USAF MIGHT AND POWER AS WAR IS UNLEASHED ON THE AGRESSOR NATION WHO IS LATER IDENTIFIED TO BE THE SOVIET UNION, THE STOCK FOOTAGE OF NUCLEAR WEAPONS BEING DROPPED BY B-47 STRATOJETS and B-52 BOMBERS ARE FROM ONCE CLASSIFIED USAF NUCLEAR TEST OPS. MOST OF THIS ENTIRE FILM IS FROM CLASSIFIED WARPLANS AND SPECIAL OPERATIONS, THIS HOMAGE TO SAC AND STRATEGIC AIR COMMANDS DEDICATION TO MISSION IS A JEWEL AND FROM A TIME WHERE THE WORLD WAS A TINDERBOX READY FOR SOMEONE TO STRIKE THE SPARK AND IGNITE A WORLDWIDE NUCLEAR CONFLAGRATION WHERE LIFE MOST LIKELY WOULD OF WENT THE WAY OF THE DINOSAUR AND ONLY MILLIONS OF YEARS LATER A FOSSILIZED REMAINS OF MAN WOULD BE DISCOVERED BY THE NEXT GENERATION THAT CAME FROM THE ASHES OF THE OLD, THIS FILM IS NOT KNOWN IF IT WAS EVER SEEN OR VIEWED OTHER THAN A HANDFUL OF HIGH RANKING USAF OFFICERS, SEE THE DESCRIPTION AND INFORMATION FROM THE NUCLEAR VAULT.COM --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "The Power of Decision" may be the first (and perhaps the only) U.S. government film dramatizing nuclear war decision-making. Commissioned by the Strategic Air Command in 1956, the film has the look of a 1950s TV drama, but the subject is the ultimate Cold War nightmare. By the end of the film, after the U.S. Air Force has implemented war plan "Quick Strike" following a Soviet surprise attack, millions of Americans, Russians, Europeans, and Japanese are dead. The narrator, a Colonel Dodd, asserts that "nobody wins a nuclear war because both sides are sure to suffer terrible damage." Despite the "catastrophic" damage, one of the film’s operating assumptions is that defeat is avoidable as long as the adversary cannot impose its "will" on the United States. The film’s last few minutes suggest that the United States would prevail because of the "success" of its nuclear air offensive. Moscow, not the United States, is sending out pleas for a cease-fire. The conviction that the United States could prevail was a doctrinal necessity because Air Force leaders assumed the decisiveness of air power. The founding fathers of the U.S. Air Force came out of World War II with an unshakeable, if exaggerated, conviction that the strategic bombing of Germany and Japan had been decisive for the Allied victory and that air power would be crucial in future conflicts. (Note 1) The film’s title: "Power of Decision" embodies that conviction. The title itself is a reference to a 1948 statement by General George C. Kenney, the Strategic Air Command’s first commander-in-chief: "A war in which either or both opponents use atomic bombs will be over in a matter of days...The Air Force that is superior in its capability of destruction plays the dominant role and has the power of decision." (Note 2) A confident statement made by one of the characters, General "Pete" Larson, near the close of reel 6 flows from that assumption: the Soviets "must quit; we have the air and the power and they know it." The story begins with Colonel Dodd, standing in the underground command post of the "Long Range Offense Force" (oddly, the Strategic Air Command is never mentioned by name). Dodd discusses the Force’s strike capabilities, its mechanisms for keeping track of its strategic assets, and its war plans. That hundreds of bombers, based in U.S. territories and overseas bases, are ready to launch at a moment’s notice is the "surest way to prevent war." Dodd does not think that the Soviets are likely to strike, but if deterrence fails and the Soviets launch an attack, "this is what will happen." What "happens" is the initial detection by U.S. air defense network of the approach of Soviet bombers over the Arctic Circle. That leads to General Larson’s decision to launch the SAC alert force under plan "Quick Strike"; airborne and nuclear-armed alert bombers fly toward the Soviet periphery, but stay at position until they receive an attack order (this was the concept of "Fail Safe" or "Positive Control" although those terms were not used in the film). About an hour after the alert force is launched, General Larson receives reports of attacks on U.S. bases, followed by more information on Soviet nuclear attacks on cities and military bases in Japan and Western Europe. "That does it," General Turner (one of Larson’s deputies) exclaims. He soon receives a call on the red phone from the Joint Chiefs, who with the President, are in a protected command post. The president has ordered the execution of "Quick Strike," releasing bombers and missiles to strike the Soviet Union. This simultaneous bomber-missile "double punch" is aimed at "all elements of [Soviet] air power" [bomber bases] along with "war making and war sustaining resources," which meant strikes on urban-industrial areas and urban populations. To depict the undepictable, the film’s producers use stock footage of nuclear tests and missile and bomber launches. Once it is evident that the Soviets have launched a surprise air attack, Colonel Dodd observes that "By giving up the initiative, the West must expect to take the first blow." This statement is not developed, but for Air Force planners, "initiative" meant a preemptive attack or a first strike. By the early 1950, senior military planners and defense officials had begun considering the possibility of pre-emptive attacks on the basis of strategic warning; that is, if the United States intelligence warning system collected reliable information on an impending Soviet attack, decision-makers could approve strikes against Soviet military forces to disrupt it. Consistent with this, Strategic Air Command war plans assumed "two basic modes" for executing strike plans [See Document One below]. () One was retaliation against a surprise attack; the other "plan was based on the assumption that the United States had strategic warning and had decided to take the initiative." The SAC strike force would then be "launched to penetrate en masse prior to the enemy attack; the main target would be the enemy’s retaliatory capability." In the last part of reel 6, Air Force intelligence briefings review the destruction of the Soviet military machine, including destruction of air bases, weapons storage centers, and government control centers, among other targets. "Target M," presumably Moscow, has "been destroyed" by a nuclear weapon which struck 300 yards from the aiming point. The Soviet attack has done calamitous damage to the United States, with 60 million casualties, including 20 million wounded, but evidence was becoming available of the "success" of the U.S. air offensive. The Soviet Air Force has been reduced to a handful of aircraft, it had stopped launching nuclear strikes outside of its territory, and SACEUR [Supreme Allied Commander Europe] reports the "complete disintegration of resistance" by Soviet ground forces. Moreover, cease-fire requests are coming in from the Soviets. In this context, General Larson’s certainty that the "Soviets must quit" conveyed prevailing assumptions about the value of strategic air power. Around the time when "The Power of Decision" as being produced, a statement by SAC Commander-in-Chief General Curtis LeMay made explicit what was implicit in Larson’s observation. In an address before the Air Force’s Scientific Advisory Board in 1957 [see Document Two], LeMay argued that U.S. strategic forces could not be an effective deterrent unless they were "clearly capable of winning under operational handicaps of bad weather and no more than tactical warning." And by winning, LeMay said he meant "achieving a condition wherein the enemy cannot impose his will on us, but we can impose our will on him." Larson’s statement about control of the air dovetailed exactly with LeMay’s assumptions about winning. Little is known about the production and distribution of "The Power of Decision," or even if it was actually shown. According to the history of the Air Photographic and Charting Service for January through June 1957, on 28 May 1956, the Strategic Air Command requested the service to produce the film, which would be classified Secret. SAC leaders may have wanted such a film for internal indoctrination and training purposes, to help officers and airmen prepare themselves for the worst active-duty situation that they could encounter. Perhaps the relatively unruffled style of the film’s performers was to serve as a model for SAC officers if they ever had to follow orders that could produce a nuclear holocaust. In any event, the script for "Power of Decision" was approved on 10 May 1957 and a production planning conference took place on 29 May 1957. The contract productions section of the Air Photographic and Charting Service was the film’s producing unit. The next step was to find actors with security clearances because even the synopsis of the film was classified secret (although later downgraded to "official use only"). As the Air Force was not in the business of hiring actors, the production unit engaged the services of MPO Productions, a New York-based firm which produced commercials and industrial films. [References to MPO, Inc. are on the index cards and on "The End" frame at the close of reel 6]. What happened next, when the work on the film was completed, SAC’s assessment of the project, and whether, when, or where the film was shown, cannot presently be determined, although the information may be in the living memories of participants or viewers from those days. Note: The relatively poor quality of this digital reproduction reflects the condition of the original reels as turned over to the National Archives by the Air Force.

USAF/DEFENSE NUCLEAR AGENCY (1970) MEETING THE TERRORIST THREAT- GUARDING USAF NUCLEAR FACILITIES

- Meeting the Terrorist Threat, Produced by the Defense Nuclear Agency - Early 1970's - 7:30 - Color - Since the emergence of the terrorist threat, the U.S. Governments concern about the possible terrorism against nuclear facilities has intensified. This video is a dramatization. It shows how the Government has responded to this threat. The video depicts nuclear security activities at an early nuclear storage site and how a small unarmed force of intruders easily enters under the security fence surrounding the site. The protective force subdues the intruders easily. In another scene, a well-armed terrorist team enters the base and kills a roving patrol with a well-placed sniper. Security forces finally overcome the terrorists after a superior counter-force arrives. On a third entry, a terrorist team enters the site under the cover of a fellow terrorist, hidden in the forest, armed with a heavy machine gun. This terrorist team reaches and penetrates a storage igloo after the roving patrol is killed, and the rapid response force is destroyed. However, the terrorists do not escape. When the superior security force appears with helicopter support and an armored personnel carrier, the terrorists, including the machine gunner, are killed. Since this film was made, the Department of Energy (DOE) has constantly improved the training and tactics of the security forces at each installation as well as the in-place security systems. With its modern day posture, it would be highly improbable that a small group of armed individuals could forcibly enter any DOE facility and escape with a nuclear weapon or any special nuclear
