SCHOOLS WERE RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR STUDENTS IN A EMERGENCY HERE STUDENTS ARE BEING BUSED TO A LOCAL SHELTER ,DURING THE LATE 1950s AND 1960s IT BECAME MANDATORY FOR NYS SCHOOL DISTRICTS TO INCORPERATE SHELTER WITHIN SCHOOLS THAT WERE BEING BUILT AS WELL AS HEAVY THICK WALLS THAT COULD BE SHELTER FROM A STORM AND SHIELDING FROM A NUCLEAR ATTACK, THE LONG ISLAND AREA WAS A BOOMTOWN AS CHEAP LAND WAS BOUGHT AND HOUSES BUILT AND LONG ISLAND SCHOOLS WERE UNABLE TO ACCOMMODATE THE RISE IN STUDENTS AND SCHOOLS STARTED BUILDING NEW SCHOOLS, EVERY SCHOOL DISTRICT BUILT BETWEEN 1-3 NEW BUILDINGS , FALLOUT SHELTERS WITH HIGH CAPACITY WERE INCLUDED IN BUILDING PLANS AND WERE STOCKED WITH RATIONS AND OTHER EQUIPMENT |
